Private and Bespoke Walking Tours of Cambridge for the Discerning Visitor

Introducing your tour guide: Deborah Monteiro

I am an art and architectural historian, originally from London. I have now lived and worked for 35 years in the University city of Cambridge and the town of Newmarket, researching and delivering a great variety of courses to locals and visitors alike. Art is my passion that continues to feed my own learning, which I love to share with like-minded people. I aim to entertain and educate but above all communicate my own sense of wonder and joy in the world around us. The redemptive power of creativity has never been more vital and desirable in our lives than it is today!

The built environment is most eloquent expression of our past, which is why I love taking visitors out on tours and together we can step back in time by walking through the heart of Cambridge. There is nothing more fulfilling than sharing such time with those who equally care about the past that lies all round us and peeling back the layers to reveal its little secrets!

Cambridge is a highly stimulating, vibrant city, historically a shrine to intellect with its colleges but also its scientific and business innovation that has a world-wide reputation. It offers an ever-changing cultural landscape with many museums and landmark exhibitions and shows which make it a privilege to be a part of. Its location by the river Cam with its boating and the many green open spaces are much used and loved, offering relaxation in a more rural environment that provides a balance to the faster, exciting urban centre.

I really enjoyed discovering the collection of portraits which Deborah introduced in her heritage talk as a snapshot of life in Britain at the start of the 21st century. She made us think about the collaborative process between artist and sitter and we discussed the empathy and approach in different examples displayed all round the college. It was an inspiring talk in a beautiful historic Cambridge College. One portrait particularly touched me ie of a woman who was suffering from dementia. The artist totally captured her empty look and made onlookers like myself so feel for those who have this dreadful illness.

I really enjoyed the Art History Summer school in Reach last Wednesday, such a lovely community event! A beautiful summers day outside and a whole afternoon inside looking at summery seascapes as seen by artists throughout the ages, and listening to your talk ,and your very interesting interpretations of each painting.

The tea was delicious, and I really enjoyed meeting old and new friends for a chat.

The whole thing was a real summery treat, and I am looking forward to more talks during the autumn term!

I thought this tour was excellent. We learnt so much and were even compelled to write notes on a menu immediately afterwards! I spend a lot of time walking round Cambridge and I will now find that experience much more rewarding, knowing the history and architecture of the city in such detail.

I sincerely hope the restaurant manager wasn't put out by you defacing the menu !!? So pleased that you both enjoyed the tour and especially its transformative result on your view of Cambridge from now on.

Deborah is a delightful teacher in the weekly art history courses and guide on her tours and excursions. She knows her subject well and makes it interesting for newbies (like me!) and experts. Her recent summer art afternoon on the "sea" was accompanied with sea-themed nibbles and refreshments and lots of chat amongst group members! A great way to spend a couple of hours away from the stresses of life.

Thank you Marianne for your kind words. I do believe you have graduated to beyond the newbie level !

Interesting talk on Art At Sea yesterday. We looked at works by artists I had not come across before. There was also an opportunity to chat to other students in the break over tea and cake. An enjoyable afternoon.

Thank you Amanda. As a newcomer to the group, I am glad you enjoyed the topic and the community we have forged over 20 odd years who come together out of term time to share discussions about art !

Have you met Deborah Monteiro? Well you should. Her courses are surreal! She makes Surrealism understandable! It matters not if you know a little or a lot, the courses are interesting and accessible to all. Deborah's love of and for art shines through all her courses and she wants us to share that.

I have thoroughly enjoyed recently attending Deborah’s History of Art course on the Post Impressionists and several appreciation days at the Fitzwilliam and the Sainsbury Centre at UEA. She is an informative and knowledgeable lecturer and brings a fresh and stimulating viewpoint to her subject matter.

I am a very well travelled lady and have enjoyed seeing so many parts of the world, but Deborah's annual tours abroad are always special, as a small private group of people, she encourages us to engage and share every experience. We go on a journey and learn so much together. Deborah is organised and always anticipates any problems. She looks after everyone, is caring, flexible and and always in a good humour, which makes everyone relaxed and coming back year after year for more adventures. We are very lucky to know her and have her as our teacher, guide and expert !
